Pendjari

Lots of people think Africa is all about lions and elephants. In fact, I rarely run into lions here. But it does happen on occasion. A few weeks ago, I traveled to the north of Benin to visit the Pendjari park. West Africa's generally not known for its parks and big game, but there are still a few animals running around.

[Trash cans...the new natural habitat of baboons.]

[Word in the park was that nobody had seen a lion in many months. We caught this one cruising with a baby warthog in her mouth.]

[We even spotted the elusive West African Amish.]

These folks are not Amish. The type of veiling and dress is conservative Christianity. I know a few of them in west Africa. Many from this group have been saved OUT of the Amish religion though.
These missionaries sacrifice the comfy living in the US and wherever they were born, to live with their families among the west African tribes and to learn their language and way of life in order to share with them the message of the Bible. They have a genuine love for the people and are not there to turn the tribes into Americans...in fact that's exactly what they do not desire.
Nice picture!

Did you happen to get their names or where they came from? I'm curious.

No, unfortunately I don't have any information about them besides my apparently completely ignorant assumptions.

I have indeed met many missionaries all over Africa (mostly Catholic) who have given up their previous lives to spend decades in the bush. I have to respect their perseverance and commitment even if I question the reasoning.
